Comparison
Emotional support animal, or psychiatric service dog?
These two get used interchangeably and they are not the same. The difference decides what rights you have, what a landlord can ask, and whether your animal can come into a restaurant with you.

The question that settles it
Name what the animal is trained to do, and describe how it was taught. If you can do that, you are describing a service dog. If what you describe is presence, comfort and calm, you are describing an emotional support animal, and that is a legitimate and protected thing to be.
Why people choose the wrong one
Almost always because of air travel. Since the rules changed in 2021 an emotional support animal no longer flies free, and people reach for the service dog label to get that back. It is the worst possible reason. Knowingly and fraudulently representing yourself as the owner or trainer of a service dog is a misdemeanor under California Penal Code section 365.7. It also makes life harder for handlers whose dogs genuinely do the work, and airline staff have become much better at spotting it.
If flying matters to you, the honest options are training a dog to task work over time, or planning for your animal to travel as a pet.
Common questions
Can an emotional support animal become a service dog?
A dog can be trained to perform tasks and become a service dog, yes. The animal does not graduate from one category to the other by paperwork. It happens through training, and only dogs can be service animals under the ADA.
Which one do I actually need?
If the problem is housing, an emotional support animal assessment usually solves it, because fair housing law treats both as assistance animals. If you also need the animal with you in shops, restaurants and public buildings, that requires a trained service dog.
Is a therapy animal the same thing?
No. A therapy animal visits other people, in hospitals, schools and care homes, usually with a volunteer handler and an organization behind it. It carries no housing or access rights for its owner.
Not sure which applies to you?
That is the most common call I take. Describe your situation and I will tell you which route fits, including when the answer is neither.
